I help LGBTQ+ teens and adults live confident and fulfilling lives.
“The damaging part of learning to live your life in two parts, whether in reality or fantasy, cannot be underestimated. In learning to hide part of yourself, you lost the ability to trust anything or anyone fully. Without knowing it, you traded humane innocence for dry cynicism.”
-Alan Downs, The Velvet Rage
For many of us who are queer, we learned to hide at an early age. It protected us, it kept us safe. But, now it isn’t working as well.
Even though we may have come out, we still hide. We may have trouble trusting, or we might have trouble enjoying our lives. We might suffer from feeling shame, anxiety, depression, or hopelessness. Or all these things at once.
We still have our closets: the doors that remain unopened.
You don’t have to live this way.
I want to invite you to open the doors of those closets. Let’s begin the work of exploring you, the work of becoming whole.
About Matthias Roberts, LMHCA
I grew up in the churches and cornfields of Iowa. I knew I was gay when I was 11 and spent the next thirteen years of my life trying to come to terms with my sexuality and what people around me taught. These were years of shame, fear, bargaining with God, and struggle. My own therapist helped me see that I can live a happy, fulfilling life. Now, I help others discover the same.
I did my training at The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology and hold an MA in Theology and Culture and an MA in Counseling Psychology. I believe that transformation happens through relationship and that the therapy relationship is a very special container for transformation.
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate in the state of Washington (#MC60884578).

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this faith-based counseling?
The short answer is no.
The therapy room is your space. While a lot of my public work is centered in faith-based arenas, my therapy practice is not one of those places. As LGBTQ+ people, many of us have complicated relationships with faith and spirituality. I welcome these conversations, but we will only approach them if you bring them up.
I work with people from all faith and non-faith backgrounds. For some, faith and spirituality is an important part of our work. For others, we never talk about it.
I'm straight. Will you still work with me?
Yes. While my areas of specialty and expertise center around the LGBTQ+ experience, I offer therapy to a wide variety of clients.
Do you offer online therapy?
While there are many benefits to online therapy, I believe that counseling is best done in person. Thus, I only offer therapy in my Seattle based office.
If you’re not in the Seattle area, I offer a limited number of 2-day intensives every year. I also offer options beyond a 50-minute session for those who are coming from a distance. Please use the contact form below to request more information.
